Vietnam Weather – Ho Chi Minh

Ho Chi Minh, formerly known as Saigon, is a city located in southeast Vietnam, south of Hanoi. It is considered as the country’s most populous city and it surrounds the Saigon River. The city has a tropical climate or Aw under the Koppen-Geiger classification system. Ho Chi Minh has an average annual temperature of 27.4 degrees Celsius (81.3 degrees Fahrenheit) and average rainfall and precipitation of 1,868 mm.

The city gets its lowest minimum temperature of 21 degrees Celsius (69.8 degrees Fahrenheit) during the month of January and the highest maximum temperature of 34.7 degrees Celsius (94.5 degrees Fahrenheit) during the month of April. Average minimum temperatures in Ho Chi Minh range from 21 degrees Celsius (69.8 Fahrenheit) to 24.4 degrees Celsius (75.9 degrees Fahrenheit), while average maximum temperatures can range from 30.3 degrees Celsius (86.5 degrees Fahrenheit) to 34.7 degrees Celsius (94.5 degrees Fahrenheit).

Vietnam’s climate tends to vary per region due to the differences in latitude and a marked variety in topographical relief. However, the country generally has four seasons: spring season from March to May is considered hot and humid with tropical showers. The summer season in the country is during the months of June to August and sees a variety of weather conditions — from heavy rain showers to dry spells, rains, and typhoons in the central part of the country. Northern regions are considered hotter during this time as well. Autumn is during the months of September to November. Rains, heat, and even storms are normal during this time. Northern areas such as Hanoi can be challenging for tourists as raging hurricanes can also occur during this time. The winter season is during the months of December to February. For the southern part of the country, this means a dry season with significantly lesser rains. However, northern regions can have unwelcoming weather, while the central part of the country is considerably warmer albeit with high humidity levels.

Spring season: Ho Chi Minh experiences it’s spring season during the months of March and May, getting around 10 to 212 mm of rainfall and precipitation, with March considered as the driest month. Minimum temperatures during this time range from 23.3 degrees Celsius (73.9 degrees Fahrenheit) to 24.4 degrees Celsius (75.9 degrees Fahrenheit), while maximum temperatures range from 33.1 degrees Celsius (91.6 degrees Fahrenheit) to 34.7 degrees Celsius (94.5 degrees Fahrenheit).

Summer season: Ho Chi Minh’s summer season is during the months of June to August is fairly rainy, the city gets 266 to 298 mm of rainfall and precipitation, with June considered as the wettest month. During this time, minimum temperatures can range from 23.8 degrees Celsius (74.8 degrees Fahrenheit) to 23.9 degrees Celsius (75 degrees Fahrenheit), while maximum temperatures range from 31 degrees Celsius (87.8 degrees Fahrenheit) to 31.6 degrees Celsius (88.9 degrees Fahrenheit).

Autumn season: Ho Chi Minh experiences its autumn season during the months of September to November, getting around 109 to 318 mm of rainfall and precipitation, with September considered as the wettest month. Minimum temperatures range from 22.8 degrees Celsius (73 degrees Fahrenheit) to 23.3 degrees Celsius (73.9 degrees Fahrenheit), while maximum temperatures range from 30.4 degrees Celsius (86.7 degrees Fahrenheit) to 30.9 degrees Celsius (87.6 degrees Fahrenheit).

Winter season: Ho Chi Minh’s winter season falls in the months of December to February — which is also considered the driest months in the city with around 2 to 42 mm of rainfall and precipitation. Minimum temperatures range from 21 degrees Celsius (69.8 degrees Fahrenheit) to 21.7 degrees Celsius (71.1 degrees Fahrenheit), while maximum temperatures range from 30.3 degrees Celsius (86.5 degrees Fahrenheit) to 32.5 degrees Celsius (90.5 degrees Fahrenheit).

Best Time to Go

The best time to visit Ho Chi Minh is during the months of November to February. The city tends to be hot and humid all year round, but it also experiences monsoon style rains during the months of May to October while March and April are considered the hottest months. So it’s best to avoid visiting during these months.
