Vietnam Weather – Hanoi

Hanoi is Vietnam’s capital city located in the northern region of the country and along the Red River delta, around 90 kilometres away from the coast. The city has a warm and temperate climate or Cwa under the Koppen-Geiger classification system. Hanoi has an average annual temperature of 23.8 degrees Celsius (74.8 degrees Fahrenheit) and average rainfall and precipitation of 1,684 mm.

The city gets its lowest minimum temperature of 13.3 degrees Celsius (55.9 degrees Fahrenheit) during the month of January and the highest maximum temperature of 33.2 degrees Celsius (91.8 degrees Fahrenheit) during the month of June. Average minimum temperatures in Hanoi range from 13.3 degrees Celsius (55.9 Fahrenheit) to 25.6 degrees Celsius (78.1 degrees Fahrenheit), while average maximum temperatures can range from 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) to 33.2 degrees Celsius (91.8 degrees Fahrenheit).

Vietnam’s climate tends to vary per region due to the differences in latitude and a marked variety in topographical relief. However, the country generally has four seasons: spring season from March to May is considered hot and humid with tropical showers. The summer season in the country is during the months of June to August and sees a variety of weather conditions — from heavy rain shower, to dry spells, rains, and typhoons in the central part of the country. Northern regions are considered hotter during this time as well. Autumn is during the months of September to November. Rains, heat, and even storms are normal during this time. Northern areas such as Hanoi can be challenging for tourists as raging hurricanes can also occur during this time. The winter season is during the months of December to February. For the southern part of the country, this means a dry season with significantly lesser rains. Spring season: Hanoi experiences it’s spring season during the months of March and May, getting around 37 to 196 mm of rainfall and precipitation. Minimum temperatures during this time range from 17.2 degrees Celsius (63 degrees Fahrenheit) to 23.4 degrees Celsius (74.1 degrees Fahrenheit), while maximum temperatures range from 23.2 degrees Celsius (73.8 degrees Fahrenheit) to 31.9 degrees Celsius (89.4 degrees Fahrenheit).

Summer season: Hanoi’s summer season is during the months of June to August is fairly rainy, the city gets 240 to 338 mm of rainfall and precipitation, with August considered as the wettest month. During this time, minimum temperatures can range from 25.5 degrees Celsius (77.9 degrees Fahrenheit) to 25.6 degrees Celsius (78.1 degrees Fahrenheit), while maximum temperatures range from 32.1 degrees Celsius (89.8 degrees Fahrenheit) to 32.7 degrees Celsius (90.9 degrees Fahrenheit).

Autumn season: Hanoi experiences its autumn season during the months of September to November, getting around 40 to 252 mm of rainfall and precipitation, with September considered as the wettest month. Minimum temperatures range from 17.8 degrees Celsius (64 degrees Fahrenheit) to 24.2 degrees Celsius (75.6 degrees Fahrenheit), while maximum temperatures range from 25.6 degrees Celsius (78.1 degrees Fahrenheit) to 30.9 degrees Celsius (87.6 degrees Fahrenheit).

Winter season: Hanoi’s winter season falls in the months of December to February — which is also considered the driest months in the city with around 16 to 30 mm of rainfall and precipitation. Minimum temperatures range from13.3 degrees Celsius (55.9 degrees Fahrenheit) to 14.9 degrees Celsius (58.8 degrees Fahrenheit), while maximum temperatures range from 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) to 22.1 degrees Celsius (71.8 degrees Fahrenheit).

Best Time to Go

The best time to visit Hanoi is during the autumn season or specifically during the months of October to November when you won’t be bothered by too much rain and the temperatures are at an average. You can also consider visiting during the winter season if you’re interested to experience Hanoi’s charm but it’s best to be prepared for slightly chilly weather.
