Laos Weather – Vientiane

Vientiane is Laos’ capital and largest city. It’s located in the banks of the Mekong River and near Thailand’s border. It features a tropical savanna climate with a distinct dry and wet season, similar to most of the country. The city has an average annual temperature of around 21.8 degrees Celsius (71.2 degrees Fahrenheit) and sees an average rainfall and precipitation of 1,660.5 mm.

The city gets its lowest minimum temperature of 16.4 degrees Celsius (61.5 degrees Fahrenheit) in January and the highest maximum temperature of 34.3 degrees Celsius (93.7 degrees Fahrenheit) in April. The area has two official seasons: rainy and dry.

During this time, average rainfall each month ranges from 78 mm to 334.6 mm, with August and September considered as the wettest months. During these months, average minimum temperatures can range from 22.9 degrees Celsius (73.2 degrees Fahrenheit) to 24.9 degrees Celsius (76.8 degrees Fahrenheit), while average maximum temperatures range from 30.8 degrees Celsius (87.4 degrees Fahrenheit) to 34.3 degrees Celsius (93.7 degrees Fahrenheit).

Dry Season: Vientiane’s dry season runs from November to March, with an average rainfall each month ranging from 7.5 mm to 33.7 mm, with November and January considered as the driest months. Average minimum temperatures can range from 16.4 degrees Celsius (61.5 degrees Fahrenheit) to 21.5 degrees Celsius (70.7 degrees Fahrenheit), while average maximum temperatures range from 28.1 degrees Celsius (82.6 degrees Fahrenheit) to 33 degrees Celsius (91.4 degrees Fahrenheit).

Best Time to Go

The best time to visit Vientiane is during the dry season of November to March, which is also considered as the city’s peak tourist season. These months are considered dry, sunny, and cool.
