Getting There

You can get to Si Phan Don via the Pakse International airport. You can then take a bus in the Northern Bus Terminal and travel 118 kilometres to Ban Nakasong. You will then take a boat ride to get to the island.

Money Matters

You can use US dollars to book your flight and online accommodations, but most business establishments accept Laotian Kip (LAK). There are no ATM machines in the area and the nearest one is 15 minutes by boat. Some hotels and restaurants accept Visa and MasterCard. Accommodations and meals are both affordable, starting at USD 4 and USD 2 respectively.

Weather

The weather in Si Phan Don is tropical-monsoon. The best time of the year to travel to the island is from November to March when the climate is cool with no rains. May to October is not a pleasant time to visit, as water levels are high. The hot season is felt from March to May.

Food

You can find a lot of local cuisines in Si Phan Don such as Thai Hinlay Curry, Vegetable Noodle Soup, Grilled Mekong fish, and Spicy Papaya Salad. Food and dining options in the area are affordable and yet delicious. You can get a rice meal for as cheap as USD 2. You can also find Western restaurants that serve burgers, pizza, salad, and BBQ.

Si Phan Don is a lovely place; the ambiance is very romantic and perfect for honeymooners. The people are very accommodating and culture shock is not a concern. The cuisine is delightful with a lot of good options for every palate. The whole place is enchanting and you can find cheap but nice accommodations.
