Pranang Cave

Located at the end of the Phra Nang beach at the spectacular tourist province of Krabi in Thailand is a cave that pays tribute to a princess goddess named Phra Nang, who according to legends could be an Indian princess killed in a shipwreck or the wife of a fisherman who was lost at sea and waited for him in the cave until she perished.

This legend made the local fishermen treat the area with the highest reverence – leaving offerings in exchange for their safety in the sea. The most prominent tributes in the cave are interesting, but at the same time, highly revered – they are Phallic shrines: depictions of the male genitalia. The cave is full of “linga” or phallic statues to honour the Hindu God Shiva. The attention to detail in these “linga” are excellent – especially the realistic and noticeable features of the ridges and heads of the male genitalia. Covered and ornamented with cloth, the shrines take on a reverent appearance, further enhanced by the incense smell around the cave.
