Liveng – Batanes Hedgerows
Standing on a view deck or on top of the hills, one can see clearly one of Batanes’ trademarks -- liveng, also known as the Batanes hedgerows.
The liveng is a collection of grass, piled stones, or tall rows of reeds that serve multiple purposes — they protect the crops against sea breeze, soil erosion, typhoons, grazing animals, and also serve as boundary lines for the land. Always neatly arranged, the rows of liveng are hard to ignore — the complex network of livengs make the landscape of Batanes look like a giant labyrinth. A sight you can only see in Batanes, the hedgerows have become one of the island’s most photographed attraction, a sight no Batanes tourist should miss.
