Batuan (Painters) Village

Art lovers and enthusiasts will find their haven in Bali’s art village – Batuan Village.

Bali’s Batuan Village is famous for Balinese Artwork or Balinese Paintings – Balinese art in its truest form and free from any outside influences. The artwork and painting style originated in the village in the 1930s and has since been recognized as a major Balinese artistic style currently known as Balinese painting. The paintings usually depict daily life themes, legendary scenes, and even freaky and fantastic creatures.

The village’s location in central Bali makes it easily accessible for tourists who would like to see a glimpse of Balinese art and culture.



Batuan Village is located around 7 kilometres north of Denpasar and about 10 kilometres south of Ubud.

Visiting the village on your own entails no cost. On the other hand, booking a Bali shopping tour that includes a visit to the Batuan Village will cost IDR 375,000 (USD 27.60) for 1 to 6 persons (includes car transportation).

The best time to visit Batuan Village is during the festivals of Full Moon day, as the village performs a theatrical dance form known as the Gambuh during such times.



Aside from viewing the paintings, you can also visit Batuan Village’s other famous landmarks and carvings such as the Pura Puseh, Pura Desa, and the “Fat Buddha” statue.
