Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum

Unveiling Cambodia's dark past, the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum provides an insight to the atrocities committed by the Pol Pot and Khmer regimes.

The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, also known as Prison S21, served as one of the largest prison and interrogation facilities during the Khmer Rouge rule. Exhibits in the museum include meticulous records and photographs of the unfortunate victims of the Khmer regime. Occasionally, two survivors from the genocide will be onsite to talk and recount their horrific experiences to the visitors.

The museum is about a 20-minute drive from the city centre.

The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum is open daily 07:30 to 17:00.

The entrance fee to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum costs USD 6 per person, and this includes an audio tour available in several languages.

The museum is accessible via hiring a tuk-tuk or taxi. Another alternative is to take the Phnom Penh Shuttle Bus Tour.

This is an ideal attraction for history buffs and best suited for small group of friends, solo travelers, and adults. It is not suitable for children.

Exploring the entire museum takes about 3 to 4 hours.

The Museum is a very popular attraction for visitors to Phnom Penh, and easily gets crowded in the morning. You can visit after lunch if you would like to avoid the crowd.

Head over to Panha Tuol Sleng Restaurant for some local cuisine such as lok lak. A few other cafes serving good coffee can also be found nearby.

 

Safety and Fraud

It is vital to keep personal belongings close to yourself to avoid being a victim of pickpockets.

 

Nearby Attraction

You may also be interested to visit the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, which is the execution and burial ground of the genocide victims. It is about 30 minutes away by tuk-tuk. If you are more keen on shopping, the famous Russian Market (about five minutes away by tuk-tuk) is a good alternative.
