Rabbit Island

A combination of sunny weather, white sand, and refreshing water makes the Rabbit Island an ideal getaway. Put away your electronic gadgets and enjoy a nice retreat to this lovely tropical beach island.

Rabbit Island, or Koh Tonsay in the Khmer language, is a 2 square-kilometre island located off the coast of Kep. A walk around the whole island will take just about 2 to 3 hours, but you will encounter a beautiful beach, mangroves, and even beat your way through rocks and bushes. The picturesque scenery will be well worth the effort. Alternatively, you can find a nice spot on a hammock or lazy chair to enjoy a relaxing afternoon.

The island is just south of Kep town and is about 5 kilometres away from the coast. It is about 30 kilometres southeast of Kampot and 110 kilometres east of the Sihanoukville International Airport.

How to Get There

Rabbit Island is only accessible by boat. Visitors can take boat rides from the Kep pier, with trips regularly scheduled throughout the day. A round trip can cost between USD 8 to 15. You can also rent your own boat but will have to pay the cost of up to 8 people, which is about USD 20 to 30. The boat ride to Rabbit Island takes about half an hour per way.

Popularity and Best Time to Go

You may want to avoid the monsoon season, which begins from May and lasts until October each year. During these months, the weather will be wet and rainy.

Activities on the island include swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, hiking, or just relaxing on the beach.

You can find little bars and restaurants by the shoreline, which serve inexpensive food and drinks.

Nearby Attractions

  • Kep Crab Market: You will have to take a half an hour boat ride back to the Kep pier and the market is only about 4 kilometres away or a 10-minute drive.
  • Kep Beach: Facing the Rabbit Island, the beach is about 2.7 kilometres from the Kep pier and a 5-minute drive.
  • Kep town: The town is about 5 kilometres north of the coast and a 12-minute ride on a tuk-tuk or motorcycle.

The island has no guesthouses, hotels, or resorts. However, a number of unique beachside bungalows in the form of simple bamboo shacks can be rented from USD 5 to 15 per night. The prices vary according to the availability of amenities such as toilets and showers. The rooms are only equipped with a bed, fan and mosquito net. If you prefer something more comfortable, you will need to travel back to the mainland of Kep, where a wider range of accommodations are available.

Good to Know

The island has no electricity, other than a few hours of electric supply in the evening from generators. The lights usually go out before midnight. Come to the island with torchlights if you are planning to stay overnight. Bring insect/mosquito repellents. Also note that the island has no broadband, wifi or tv, but phone service is available.
